amount of material for the public collection. Presently these tasks are carried out by one Stone Age and two Bronze Age experts, two are specialised in the era of the Great Invasions and one in the Middle Ages. As a result of their work, a load of findings amply described in the literature can be viewed in the archaeological standing exhibition of the museum. ISTVÁN SZABÓ: HISTORICAL RESEARCH Museologist training in Hungary was initiated at Loránd Eötvös University of Budapest in the 1950's. Roughly by the end of the 60's the treble professional conditions of museology {collection, exhibition, and elaboration) had been achieved in all major areas including historical research. The activities of the local historian museologist are determined by research primarily concentrated on Szolnok (and in connection with the town the county that surrounds it). The earliest area of research is Szolnok in the 16™-17™ century and the age of Turkish invasion. One of the most interesting aspects in connection to the exploration of the past of Szolnok and the county is the age of the development of the bourgeois mentality based on Pest-Szolnok line of the Central Hungarian Railway opened on 1 September 1847, and how Szolnok became chief town of the county. Fundamentally it was when the settlement became a town, and when the development of the bourgeois mentality started. The third important stage in the history of the town was brought by the development of artistic life in the recent past, which became a positive force in changing local history. After the construction and opening of the local Artists' Colony it became a decisive part of the history of the town. Especially as it gave an impulse to the establishment of a local artistic gallery, and from its beginning it has always formed a considerable part of the life of the museum. Finally we have to mention the complex examination of the way of life beginning in the 60 's. Next to the controlled themes of exhibitions from 1963 onwards the collection, exhibitions and publishing activities of the museum have been formed by history experts. So the above mentioned themes have been completed with the following (in their chronological order): The settlements of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county until the Turkish invasion Re-population after the Turkish invasion Military history of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county Guilds, trade-corporations, civilian associations and fellowships Estonian and Baltic studies after Szolnok and Tallin became brother-towns Studies in the field of the history of photography and animated pictures Next to the above mentioned, the János Damjanich Museum has been doing and partly co-ordinating the local history activities and tasks of the county. CSABA BENEDEK - ANNABELLA GECSE: ETHNOGRAPHICAL COLLECTION The paper is trying to introduce the activities of the Ethnographic Department of the János Damjanich Museum (collecting, scientific elaboration, publications) from its beginning up to the present day. The themes of the seven chapters don't necessarily comply with the order of the tasks of a museum since an ethnographic exhibition can contain all three areas from collecting to displaying. In chapter The development of the ethnographic collection the authors are reviewing the objects that make up the collection, the results of the greater thematic collecting activities and the most significant and valuable pieces. In chapter Periodical exhibitions the reader can find out about the most important periodic exhibitions. Because of the erratic fate of the museum of Szolnok, until 1966 the museum hardly had any exhibition rooms, but still several excellent exhibitions were opened in the county and in the Gallery of Szolnok. 142
