The Artist's Colony of Szolnok 1902-2002
LÁSZLÓ SZABÓ (1927) He finished studying sculpture at the Budapest School of Arts in 1956 as a student of Sándor Mikus, András Beck and Pál Pátzay. He has lived and worked at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok since 1959. He went on vocational trips to Italy, Poland and the U.S.S.R. He held many one-man shows and exhibited at all the Hungarian and foreign exhibitions of the Colony. His works are on display in a number of Hungarian towns. OSZKÁR SZIRT (1889-1915) He was a genius of great promise at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok who unfortunately died at a young age in the Great War. He studied at the Budapest School of Arts under Károly Ferency and Adolf Fényes. LAJOS SZLÁNYI (1869-1949) He studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Budapest and at Karlsruhe Academy . He wandered all over Germany, France, England, Belgium and Holland. His painting strive for simplicity and the expression of essence. He was one of the founders of the Artists' Colony of Szolnok and an ordinary member until his death. PÉTER SZÜLE (1886-1944) He studied at the Budapest School of Arts in and then went on vocational trips to Germany, France and Italy. He came to Szolnok as a student. Adolf Fényes exercised influence on his realistic portraits. He worked in Szolnok until 1928 and then moved to Budapest. DEZSŐ UDVARY (1891-1975) He came as a young man to the Artists' Colony of Szolnok and worked here until World War II. He painted naturalistic landscapes and town quarters. JÁNOS VASZARY (1867-1939) Bertalan Székely was his teacher at the School of Decorative Arts in Budapest. In 1887 he went to study in Munich where he was a member of the young painters who were grouped around Simon Hollósy. Later he studied at the Julian Academy in Paris. After this a great change came over his painting, but they were plagued by problems encountered by modern artists. The Fauves group brought a new change to his art. After the Great War he taught at the Budapest School of Arts for nearly ten years. This decade brought a decisive change in the teaching of the young artistic generation, because he put the free school style of education into practice as opposed to the academic style. BÉLA VIDOVSZKY (1883-1973) He studied in Budapest, Munich and Paris. He painted for the first time at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok in 1911. He worked here as an ordinary member until the end of World War II. ISTVÁN ZÁDOR (1882-1963) Kossuth Prize winning laureate painter and graphic artist. He studied in Budapest, at the Ecola des Beaux-Arts of Paris and in Florence. He painted mostly interiors, landscapes and portraits. He lyrically represented the land along the Tisza in his etchings. He was one of the most prominent figures of Szolnok art between the two world wars. TIVADAR ZEMPLÉNYI (1864-1917) He studied painting at the School of Decorative Arts in Budapest and then in Munich. After returning home he worked in Nagybánya and later in Szolnok. He was a teacher at the Budapest School of Arts from 1903. His plein-air subject pictures and landscapes were influenced by the academic manner of Munich. LAJOS ZOMBORY (1867-1933) He started his career as a draughtsman at the bureau of Ödön Lechner. Later he studied painting in Budapest and Munich. He moved to Szolnok and became an ordinary member of the Colony. He painted mostly landscapes and animal pictures in the style of plein-air. 153
