The Artist's Colony of Szolnok 1902-2002

LAJOS MÉSZÁROS (1925-1971) After studying at the Budapest School of Arts he moved to Szolnok in 1957. The Tisza and Zagyva ri­vers and the streets of the Tabán district appear in his oil paintings, which are full of natural simpli­city and follow the traditions of József Koszta and Adolf Fényes. DÁNIEL MIHALIK (1869-1971) He was a student of Bertalan Székely and Károly Lotz in Budapest before studying in Munich. He was a founder of the Artists' Colony of Szolnok where he painted realistic lowland landscapes using broad strokes of the brush. ADOLF MÜLLER (1823-1882) He studied at the Academy of Vienna before settling in Szolnok in the 1850s. Pettenkofen's annual visits can be accredited to him. ISTVÁN NAGY (1920) He finished studying sculpture in 1957 at the Budapest School of Arts as a student of András Beck, Iván Szabó and Pál Pátzay. He has worked at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok since 1957. He is a con­stant exhibitor at the Hungarian and foreign exhibitions of the colony. He has studied in Moscow, Prague, Italy and Bulgaria. A number of Hungarian towns have erected statues by him. He has worked on several occasions at the Hajdúböszörmény International Artists' Colony and as a guest at the Villány International Sculptors' Colony. FERENC OLGYAY (1872-1939) He studied in Budapest and Munich before working in Szolnok. He is one of the founders of the Ar­tists' Colony of Szolnok. He is a prominent figure of the plein-air landscape painting movement. La­ter Béla Iványi Grünwald invited him to Kecskemét Artists' Colony during its formation. He won the State's Gold Medal for Painting in 1905. JÁNOS P. ВАК. (1913-1981) He became a member of Ferenc Helbing's graphics class at the Budapest School of Arts and Crafts in 1929. He was taught by Gyula Rudnay and Oszkár Glatz at the Budapest School of Arts and later be­came Gyula Rudnay's assistant there. After this he went to Italy to study painting. In 1947 he was one of the leaders of Rudnay's free school in Baja. His works of folk subjects were exhibited many times. He held a one-man show at the Csók Gallery in 1958 and 1962, and whilst on a vocational trip to Italy he exhibited them in Milan. His main style is figurái composition, including portraits and nudes. JÓZSEF PALICZ (1931) He finished studying at the Budapest School of Arts in 1956 as a student of Géza Fónyi, Bertalan Pór and Gyula Hincz. He worked for a while in Kecskemét and then at the Szolnok Artists' Colony, later moving to Zalaegerszeg. His subjects are taken from everyday life, based around lowland and Bala­ton landscapes. MIHÁLY PATAY (1910-1956) Painter and woodcarver. He was young when he first entered the Szolnok Artists' Colony, later gra­duating from the Budapest School of Arts under the guidance of the Colony's artists. Then he was awarded a scholarship to study in Italy. His engraving technique is of a very high standard. Unfortu­nately his drawings and tools were destroyed in World War II. He moved into one of the renovated ateliers in 1948. His untimely death interrupted one of the most talented Hungarian woodcarvers'ca­reer. IZSÁK PERLMUTTER (1866-1932) He studied in Budapest and then in Paris under Lefebre and Freury. During his long staying Holland he painted landscapes and subject pictures.
