An Italian Family in the Building Trade in the County of Zala during the Age of Dualism Anna Megyeri A study of the uneven entrepreneurial careers and opportunities of Tamás Morandini and his two uncles during the ''Belle Epoch" contribute to our understanding and offer an example of the high degree to which foreign artisans were able to adapt their abilities as well as Hungarian society's ability to accept them. The footsteps of the children of an artisan family from Gemona in the Italian province of Friuli took them to three towns in the county of Zala: Csáktornya, Nagykanizsa and Zalaegerszeg. They became recognised as quality builder-architects, and all three obtained Hungarian citizenship. In addition to his activities as a builder, Bálint Morandini (1835-1918) operated two brick factories and worked in partnership with his brother Román (1851-1922), who lived for some twenty years in Nagykanizsa. Their first joint venture was the building of the town's casino. Tamás Morandini (1869-1921), who landed in Zalaegerszeg, obtained his architect's diploma at the Zurich Polytechnic and then entered partnership with Román Morandini in Nagykanizsa. They worked together on a number of large building projects in Zalaegerszeg (1894: Arany Bárány (The Golden Lamb), 1898: Town Hall, in 1900 the post office building, converted out of the old poor hospital. His name is connected with the execution of the grammar school, built in 1896-97. In 1898 he married Maria Weber, the daughter of a German railwayman's family that were settled here at the time of the building of the railways; his Italian family was not too happy but accepted the girl. He obtained Hungarian citizenship in 1900 as a resident of Zalaegerszeg, and as a self-employed company owner undertook planning, specialist advisory work and as a master builder construction work. At the beginning of the 20th century he had a defining role in the formation of the townscape. 1 Ie was commissioned with the planning and building of public buildings (the gendarmerie barracks in 1903, the synagogue in 1904, the evangelical church and the higher elementary school for girl in 1907) and homes, tenements and business premises. He built his own house in 1904. He was a most active member of the corporation, the fire brigade and now
