furnishing of the so-called grand parlour until the Tornallyay family could live in the mansion. As in 1947 the family was deprived of their property, and when forced to leave, it was a near miracle that they could save the seatings from the confiscated mansion. The other set of furniture, by now an incomplete dining-room suite (a small and a large sideboard, easy chair, 6 chairs) is a hand-made article, made in 1925 (as oral tradition has it, it was a prize-winner item at the 1925 Budapest International Fair). It was influenced by the pluralist style of the second historicism in the interwar period, and represents the French régence style (Philip of Orleans). These items were purchased as well as sold to the museum by our informant, Zoltán Tornallyay (III), who - following family traditions - furnished his drawing-room in his house built in the 1980s with the present set that matched the drawingroom suite. The objects that help to reconstruct the history of the family and the lifestyle of the 19 tn20 th-century family from the lesser nobility added to our knowledge about the social strata concerned, while the objects on their own fill in gaps in our collection as they represent the decline of the lesser nobility.
