New Acquisitions in the Hungarian National Museum - 2005 Lajos Pallos The most varied and ample exhibition of new acquisitions in the last ten years was organized last year. The most significant acquisitions of the Archaeological Cabinet comprised enamelled metal ornamental objects from the Roman period and the grave-goods of an Avar head of a clan. The most important object of the exhibition was, however, the gold ring of King Coloman. The ring with inscription, dated to the turn of the 1 l tn-12 th centuries, was donated to the museum by the Sedlmayr family. Among the remarkably wide-ranging acquisitions of the Historical Cabinet, some are worth special mentioning, like the pipe collection comprising a valuable Hungarian material, or various objects connected to significant historic personalities, such as the ornamental glass of Lajos Kossuth and the desk-knife of István Tisza. Collections representing the object culture of everyday life were increased by objects coming from bourgeois households from the first half of the 20 th century. Meanwhile, the poster collection was increased by colour posters of films from the 1910s. The coin collection of the Medal Cabinet was enriched by a unique item, a gold coin of Maria Theresa minted in quintuple weight. Besides, a considerably ample material entered the decoration and security collection of the Cabinet. The most significant acquisition of the Historical Gallery was a water-colour painting by Mór Than, a painter in the 19 th century. Than, who recorded events of the 1848-49 War of Independence, portrayed Count Dénes Almásy in a Hussar officer's uniform. The rich acquisitions of the Historical Photographic Collection includes the photographs of outstanding historic personalities, group pictures taken in various social environments, albums, etc. The largest-scale increase of the Cabinet is the result of a collecting carried out on the 50 th anniversary of the Revolution and War of Independence of 1956, during the course of which hundreds of both professional and amateur photographs entered the museum. The Library was also represented at the New Acquisitions Exhibition of 2005 as according to the will of the recently deceased György Györffy, a notable historian, his reference library was purchased by the museum. From his collection, the most precious 18 tn-19 lh-century volumes were on display.
