Two books form the basis of the present article: one titled Fordulj kedves lovam (Turn round my dear horse) published in 1972, and the other titled Rákóczinéphagyományok nyomában (On the scent of Rákóczi folk traditions) published in 2003, both of which giving an ample overview of tales, legends and songs preserved in oral traditions. The publishing of both works is largely due to the Ádám Vay Circle of Friends. Described in the essay, the methods of folkloristic data collection we applied with the participation of students is not new to ethnographers. The questionnaire compiled by Imre Ferenczi and Mátyás Molnár groups the questions into three issues. This formed the basis of an ethnographic data collection in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County at the beginning of the 1960s which aimed at collecting, systematizing and publishing traditions connected to Rákóczi and the kuruc era.
