ideological struggle," was the ^socialist operetta" based on the model of the Soviet operetta and a reaction against classical Viennese Grand Operetta. The first example, „Golden Star," (Aranycsill ag) made its debut in the November of 1950. Recalling the events of 1947, when the frozen River Tisza burst its banks, this work by the composer Endre Székely and the writer György Hámos took to the operetta stage the flood and the heroic struggle against the enemies of socialism. The heroes are the „sons of the people": the new socialist people's army and the self-confident workers of the collectives based upon the Soviet kolkhoz. The „enemy" - old landowners, army officers and rich fanners - attempts, unsuccessfully of course, to prevent them from achieving their aims. The first socialist operetta was a lightning success: within two years it was not only performed in the National Operetta Theatre and all of the provincial theatres, but also toured Czechoslovakia. The theatrical professional also made every effort to tow the communist party ideological line: Rákosi 's word was law, older experienced directors and actors exercised self-criticism on the eiTor ol' their previous ways. This study presents the conditions leading to the birth of „Golden Star" and the career of the piece.
