244 Füvessy Anikó Anikó Füvessy THE POTTERIES OF LAJOS KATONA WITH HUSSAR MOTIVE The Hungarian folk art ornamentation is mainly based on plant motives. It was only the bird out of the animal motives which could work its way into this ornamentation system. The ornamentation of pottery contains plant motifs on the first place but we find certain examples for animal ornaments. This study examines the hussar motive in Tiszafured, a pottery centre of the Great Hungarian Plain, which takes on traditions from the 16-17 11 century. Lajos Katona (1851-1910) a member of a numerous pot-maker family used to ornament the pots he manufactured with this hussar motif. There are 9 pots remained with this kind of ornamentation from 1873 to 1895: 1 micky-pot, 3 flasks and 5 bottles. With the exception of the micky-pot, the hussar is pictured on the face. On the back either a bouquet of flowers or an inscription is findable. On the side of the micky-pot we can see life-like scenes: the hussar is being offered a drink, a group of soldiers are talking. On the back of one of the bottles a fisherman is rowing in a boat. These motives are individual initiations of the potter which doesn't appear on any of the works of other potters from Tiszafured. The horse motif on pots is occasional, it could not become a part of an ornamentation system which is based on plant motifs. The common taste sets limits to the innovations which appear in ornamentation and only accepts it if it can organically connect with the already existing ones. The potters didn't even experiment with the introduction of new, more significant motifs on mass products. These always remained individual attempts and always characterized the pots prepared for special occasions.
