LÁSZLÓ SELMECZI The birth of a collection of local history The archaeological collection of Törökszentmiklós and the archaeological work of its creator, Béla Butyka, teacher of a reformed elementary school Due to the autodidactic archaeological work of Béla Butyka, teacher of a reformed elementary school, a significant collection of archaeological (ethnography and local history) was formed in Törökszentmiklós during the four decades between 1930 and 1970, which was acknowledged by the cultural high authority in 1965 as an independent institution (a collection of local history). The paper presents the life and work of Béla Butyka. It describes his aspiration to use his collection for the benefit of the public. The author expounds the most important archaeological sites of Törökszentmiklós and the findings that got into the collection from them, complemented with the results of modern archaeological excavations of recent times.
