A cult object from Tószeg-Laposhalom

The author found the object described in this paper in a private collection. It came to light during construction works in 1969-70 in the village of Tószeg. This world famous miniature ceramic object shows a stylized form of a bird, and the circumstances of its appearance and its stylistic features hint at the early Bronze Age Nagyrév culture. Reviewing the data on ascoses (bird-shaped vessels) unearthed in Hungary, one can establish that no piece that can be dated back to the Nagyrév culture had been known before. Most of them are bigger, in the inside of one of them using physical-chemical tests, they determined the presence of animal blood, so we reached a possible explanation for the role of this type of objects in religious rituals. However, the smaller-sized pieces - and especially this one with a volume of two centilitres - could only serve symbolic roles at best. What is puzzling though is not its function, but the fact that no ascos had ever been unearthed at any archaeological sites among the great quantity Nagyrév culture findings.
