Helping the recovery of the Roma population with administrative measures

A summary of the experiences and practices at Öcsöd municipality between 1962 and 1983

This paper was originally written as a thesis at the College of Public Administration in 1984. Although the decades since then have brought along tremendous changes in the life of the Hungarian Roma population (including those living in Öcsöd), it still provides an accurate description of the situation of this minority in the middle of the 1980’s, and as such, it could serve as a solid basis for further research.

The author aims at:

introducing the present and future of the Roma population living in Öcsöd emphasizing the positive, radical changes in their lifestyle that have occurred since the 1960’s;- examining what measures were taken by the party, state, educational, cultural and health care authorities as part of the implementation of central directives in order to promote the integration of the local Roma minority;

evaluating the achievements, and making suggestions to future activities in order to close up the gap.
