Régészeti tanulmányok - Szentpéteri József: ADAM és ÁRPÁD. A Kárpát-mendence kora középkori lelőhelykatasztere (VI - XIII. század)

TISICUM XXVI. József Szentpéteri ADAM & ÁRPÁD Early medieval (6th-13,h centuries) site gazetteer of the Carpathian Basin Goal of the research The name of the proposed research project, ADAM & ÁRPÁD, is made up of two parts. ADAM is the abbreviation of the gazetteer of Avar sites, published in German (Archäologische Denkmäler der Awarenzeit in Mitteleuropa. Ed.: József Szentpéteri. Varia Archaeologica Hungarica XIII/1-2. Budapest, 2002). Representing the co-ordinated work of over ninety experts-both Hungarian and foreign-for over twenty years, the research and the publication of the book was made possible by OTKA grants. The book’s editor was the present grant applicant. ÁRPÁD refers to the centuries from the Hungarian Conquest period as used in the archaeological literature (although historians generally use this term to refer to the foundation of the medieval Hungarian state in the 10th century) to the close of the Árpádian Age (11 th-13thcenturies). For practical reasons, the upper chronological boundary is sometimes extended to the 14th century in order to integrate archaeological research with György Györffy’s studies on the period’s historical geography. Hypotheses, key questions The proposed project represents the first phase of a long-term research, whose foundations are laid according to the following criteria: in addition to the sites of solitary graves, burial grounds, hoards and stray finds, the database will also contain the sites with a relevance for settlement history; in order to create an accurate list of Hungarian sites, we plan to collaborate with the Gyula Forster National Centre for Cultural Heritage Management, the successor of the National Office of Cultural Heritage; the upper chronological boundary of the database will be extended to the close of the Árpádian Age (1301) in order to integrate the archaeological data with the information contained in the already published volumes of Árpád-kori történeti földrajz [Historical geography of the Árpádian Age] and the volumes still in preparation. The special criteria of the database’s settlement history module are as follows: We shall only consider the settlement sites that have been excavated, meaning that the database will not contain the sites identified and registered during field surveys. The starting point is the registration of the already published data, even if it includes unreliable information. This dataset of limited reliability will be checked and supplemented with a few key sites, whose data will be entered in detail in order to demonstrate the level of data registration deemed desirable for creating a later archaeological artefact database. We shall begin the verification of the data registered from the archaeological literature for a selected area such as north-eastern Hungary, which played a key role during the study period. Research methods The structure of the database will be suitable for handling the necessary datasets for a site gazetteer (basic version), but its overall structure will also enable the incorporation of archaeological artefact datasets, to be added during the research project’s successive phases (enlarged version with a module to be added later, which will be based on the Képes Szókincstár [Illustrated Glossary], an illustrated glossary and typological guide). In addition to the sites of solitary burials, cemeteries, hoards and stray finds, the sites with a relevance for settlement history will also be entered into the database. In order to provide accurate information on sites, we plan to collaborate with the Gyula Forster National Centre for Cultural Heritage Management, the successor of the National Office of Cultural Heritage. When defining the upper chronological boundary of the database, one of the main considerations is that we should be able to integrate the archaeological data with the data contained in the already published volumes of Árpád-kori történeti földrajz [Historical geography of the Árpádian Age] and the volumes still in preparation. In addition to the participation of the period’s Hungarian and foreign specialists, we shall also establish contact with the directors of various university departments and we shall seek to draw university students into the project. Expected results The two periods are examined according to a set of consistent criteria across the entire Carpathian Basin. The chronological framework of the research project was chosen with the following considerations in mind: the Avar tribes led by the Khagan Bayan conquered the region in 567; the rule of the Avars was toppled by the arrival of the Hungarian tribal alliance under Prince Árpád; this period was followed by the organisation and foundation of the medieval Hungarian state by Prince Géza and King St. Stephen, and the consolidation of the Hungarian Kingdom, firmly embedded in Christian Europe. The aim is to gather all the available information on the settlements and burials of these seven centuries and to construct an internet database of the archaeological sites in Hungarian and English, as well as to publish a separate volume of the Hungarian sites (Eds.: Kovács, László - Révész, László:Magyarország honfoglalás kori és kora Árpád-kori sírleletei [The Conquest period and early Árpádian Age grave finds of Hungary]). As part of the project, we will create a database that can be accessed through the internet and can be queried in both Hungarian and English. The index page will contain all the relevant keywords that appear in each entry of ADAM. The mapping of the sites in the database will enable the creation of map sections and general maps with an adequately high resolution. By the end of the four-year project, the beta version of the Hungarian and English language database will be running and the manuscript of the burial sites selected from the ÁRPÁD module will be ready for publication as a continuation of FÉK (Fehér, Géza - Éry, Kinga - Kralovánszky, Alán: A Közép-Duna-medence magyar honfoglalás- és kora Árpád-kori sírleletei.
