TISICUM XXII. - TÖRTÉNETTUDOMÁNY Irodalom Csaba Kasza MALTA - SZIGETVÁR. CAUSE AND EFFECT? BRADFORD, Ernie 1964. The Great Siege Malta 1565. London, Penguin Books. FRELLER, Thomas 2010. Malta The Order of St John. Malta, Midsea Books Ltd. My aim with this work is the compact and general presentation of the circumstances of Malta in 1565. The reason of siege was Malta's geographical position, the island was in the way of turkish expansion. In addition the cavalliers - living on the island at that time - really ensure their own livelihood with corsairing. Pagan ships were rided frequently by the Order. The „casus belli” in 1564 was that they captured Kustir Aga’s - who was the chief of eunuchs -ship, and that vessel was loaded luxurious goods for the High Porte. After the incident Suleyman decided the siege of Malta. The „great siege” - that nowdays is called by the Malteses - was from 18th May 1565 to 8th September 1565. The Turkishs failed the action. The unsuccessful siege makes Suleyman understood that it is better for the Turkish army to conquer on the land. Realising this fact he started a campaign against Vienna, but he reached Szigetvár only. Here he was died in 6th September 1566, nearly one year later the end of the Malta siege.
