Máté Dávid Tamáska History of architecture of Tiszafüred in modern times The study presents the history of architecture of a small town in the Great Hungarian Plain from the 1700s until the modernization of the second part of the 1940s. The changing of the thematic elements of the settlement structure is in the centre, i.e. development of the street and tenement structure, and the evolution of the dwelling-houses. The survey first defines the 18 t h century country-town with double-tenements. The oldest centre was the Protestant church, the funnel-like widening main streets run from here fanning out toward the edge of the settlement. The double-tenements order split up from the 19 t h century. Poorer rural families settled in the interior living area, while middle estates were formed in the former outer, the so called pen gardens. However building up the manor gardens and villain vineyards semicircle around the town started that time. Beside the former centralized structure the axis of the main street stands out more firmly. The heyday of the main street running through the river bank falls on the era of the development of the bourgeois mentality in the beginning of the century. The imperfectly closed street with the commercial and administrative facilities developed at that time. The civil architecture mixed with the economic function in the beginning (merchants' houses), but from the 1920s the workplace and the home began to separate. Apart from the latter phenomenon the patterns of the civil architecture altered the peasants' buildings too. Eventually the development can be called historical formed a dual structure. The small town and peasant-citizen architecture of the inner areas and the avenues out of the town, and surrounded by the architecture of the impoverished peasantry's giant village which preserved archaic forms. As a summary of my study I defined three strong tendencies in the 250 years long history of architecture of the town. The first is the expansion, since the inner areas of the settlement show an almost constant increase. It could happen as an allotment but more typical was the annexation of economic zones. The marked outgrowth of this process is the vineyards huts which gradually became peasants' small estates. The second phenomenon is the differentiation of the centre, formerly the church served as a sole centre, but the social sub-systems developed their own centres (various forms of trade, educational units, administrative offices etc.). This differentiating centre provided the urban landscape of Tiszafüred. The third strong trend is the forming of streets. In the course of this process the former irregular clusters gradually became band-like tenements and the gables of the houses got to the street front edge of the tenement. » 70 «
