The Research of Sacral Mementos in the Open Air in Poland

From a science history point of view, the relatively long starting period began in the second half of the 19th century: the outlines of the scientific research of small sacral objects were drawn, its problems, its essence, its connections with Christianity and secular life were defined in the history of individuals, communities, regions and nations. This period might be referred to as the age of "attracting attention". They wanted to close this period of sporadic knowledge in 1958, when the first Polish the­matic monograph was published: Udziela, Seweryn: Kap­liczki i krzyze przydrozne w Polsce (Roadside Chapels and Crosses in Poland) Warsaw, 1958. However, due to the Socialist spirit of the age, this paper was surrounded by silence and had very few followers. For a long while they did not deal with the question scientifically. 163
