Budapest PÉTER LANGO ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND CHARTER DATA FOR THE JAZYGIAN SETTLEMENTAL HISTORY IN THE 10-15™ CENTURIES "In the Conquest Period, this sandy and swampy march was, like all other landseapes, most characteristic around its centre: a marsh, a swamp. Its edges towards the Tisza were settled already in early times... Only that part of this landscape became the Jászság, which was really a sunken swamp: the catchment area of the Zagyva and Tárna and its sandy edges". This is how Ferenc Fodor, a great geographer of the fírst half of the 20 th century, characterized the environment of the historical Jászság. Fodor's deseription was based partly on his own observations, made around the middle of the 20 th century, and partly on the scientific studies of the preceding two hundred years. Following from the positivist, static approach so typical for his research, he suggested that the area did not turn intő a swamp only in the modern era, but had been like that before as well. He considered the features deseribed in the 18 th century constant, changed only by later river regulations. He did not take intő consideration that the biological and physical environment had already been modified by humán impact before that time, and that environmental changes may have occurred due to non-anthropogenic causes as well. Paleoecological results may enhance our knowledge of the biological and geographical environment of the population that once lived here. The research carried out may help sketch a new map of the pást landscape. Through the comparison of environmental and archaeological data we may be able to examine whether, in the light of new results, Ferenc Fodor's earlier model is still valid or is in need of revision. With the help of the historical model (frontier society) used by Nóra Berend, we may alsó find an answer to the question of the inner causes of the economic development of the Jász communities. The legal status of the Jász, close to that of the iobagiones castri, provided numerous economic advantages for the population. These advantages were exploited well by the Jász for their own benefít and they always tried to increase the number of royal privileges bestowed upon them. By the 15th century, the legal status of the Jász seemed so advantageous that serfs írom neighbouring noble estates moved in among them. 96
