KATALIN CZEGLÉDI: GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES AND HUNGARIAN PREHISTORY

KATALIN CZEGLÉDI GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES AND HUNGÁRIÁN PREHISTORY The orientál links of the geographical names of the Carpathian Basin (Szinva) As a result of the comparative grammatical (phonological, syntactical, morphological and semantic) analysis of the geographical names of the Volga and Ural, the relations between these names and the geographical and other proper names, appellative nouns and grammatical lexemes of the Carpathian Basin became apparent. This revelation has enabled me to decode the names of waterways of the Carpathian Basin. In this paper, I am trying to bring forward the orientál links of the geographical names of the Carpathian Basin through the analysis of the name of the river Szinva. Not only do these links have consequences from a linguistic point of view, but alsó they are relevant on the basis of our prehistory. One of the main questions - whether the names of waterways of the Carpathian Basin are the results of the collective consciousness and language that emerged here, or they were brought from the East - has not been answered yet by linguistic means. Ali we can safely state is that communication between the Carpathian Basin and the orientál regions dates back to ancient times, but the earliest time cannot be determined with our present probative methods. It can be confirmed that the names of waterways have apparent relations with those of the Volga-Urai region. The names of waterways of both areas are of primary nature in comparison with the names of Western Europe. 67
