Kengyel-Baghy-Grange-Kengyel-Bank II

JÁNOS CSEH Rengyel-Baghy-grange-Kengyel-bank II To the investigation of the beginnings of the Gepids' material culture in the Merowing Age The archaeological relics coming to publication in what follows have undoubtedly a rather modest place among the settlement sites dated back to the 4th —6th centuries in the fields of Kengyel village. We are facing a settlement to be essentially little extension on the basis of the researches achieved so far and the excavation itself was also of smaller size, of rescuing character. The pottery come there to light is not too plentiful either, nevertheless there is a collection of objects having speciality in some measure — although today we can hardly say it after the archaeological works of the last years in the Middle Tisza Region, mainly in the environs of Kengyel. We refer to the antlers showing the bone turning on the settlement under discussion. However, this activity of handicraft had been intensive indeed on the settlement lying some hundred meters further eastwards. Since the latter archaeological material can be dated to the decades following the Hun Age and proceding the period of the ceramics with stamped decoration — perhaps not only as working hypothesis —, in this manner our present little ensemble of finds is representing this periódus too (Kengyel-Early Migration Period-Group B). Exactly the fact what has been said just now, namely that it indicates the beginnings, formation of the settlement culture of the Gepids in the Early Merowing Age, is the real importance of the site of Kengyel-bank II.
