Császi Irén: Bakó Ferenc a népszokások kutatója

Irén Császi FERENC BAKÓ, RESEARCHER OF FOLK CUSTOMS One of the main focal areas of Ferenc Bakos ethnographical research focused on the rich traditions of the Palóc people. He went to the Palóc region to study customs related to weddings, as one of the main events in peoples lives, researching their regional characteristics, social background and evolution. He wrote studies on the wedding customs of Orhalom, Novaj, Felsőtárkány and the Lower Mátra Region, and devoted an entire book to this topic, entitled Palócföldi lakodalom (The Palóc Land Wedding). He also studied the burial traditions of Orhalom, summarising his findings in a publication entitled Hagyomány és változás a palóc temetkezési szokásokban (Tradition and Change in the Palóc Burial Customs), providing valuable data on the subject. He organised a collection network in the county's schools to explore data on the traditions of may-poles and may- baskets. Later he extended his research to include the area of Upper Hungary, eventually summing up the results in studies. He published a few articles and a smaller study on the traditions of the carnival season, Easter and Christmas celebrations. The study aims to present the results of the above research areas, as well as the yet unpublished collection of customs, kept in the Bakó Archive of the Dobó István Castle Museum. 98
