The study, published for the centenary of Ferenc Bakos birth, discusses the research of the distinguished ethnographer on underground buildings. It covers the various ground-plans, building materials and even heating equipment of cave dwellings, showing comparisons from a geographical and historical perspective.

The research of cave dwellings and wine cellars from the aspects of heritage protection, the identification of such structures in the Bükk Region and in Heves County, their classification and historical overview formed an integral part of his professional career. His goal, however, was more than just making an inventory. He published a dozen or so studies on the topic, which we have decided to examine from a unique aspect, wishing to identify findings of his that had the most impact on Hungarian ethnography over the past two decades.
