Szecskó Károly: 100 éve született Sugár István

Károly Szecskó ISTVÁN SUGÁR BORN 100 YEARS AGO Historian István Sugár was born on 4 November 1917 in Budapest, to a family of intellectuals. He was a self-taught historian who soon advanced to the scientific scene as a specialist. His excellent knowledge of German and Latin was a great help in his research. His research findings were published from 1956. He was a prolific historian (1,500 bibliographic records) who covered a wide range of topics. He was active in military, church, art, literary, linguistic, economic and postal history. His favourite subject was the Eger Castle and its history, in the promotion of which he played a key role after the Second World War. István Sugár was also an outstanding educator. As a captivating and charismatic lecturer, he spoke to large audiences all over Hungary. Although he spent half his life in archives, working 10-15 hours a day, he was not an ivory-tower scholar, but a public figure through and through. His extensive knowledge was coupled with outstanding modesty. He was always keen to give a helping held to younger people, introducing them to the methodology of research. Arrogance was unknown to him both as a professional and as an individual. He lived and worked for his beloved town. As an acknowledgment of his work, he received a honourary citizenship from the Municipality of Eger in 1994. István Sugár died in Eger on 30 July 1999 after a long illness. 597
