THE LAUNCH OF THE PRESS IN EGER: THE EGER GAZETTE (i860-1861)

At the beginning of the 1860s, when Eger had around 18 thousand inhabitants, the towns printed media was launched with the first issue of the Eger Gazette on 1 September 1860. My study describes the history of Eger’s first regular publication, which lasted nearly one and a half years (l September 1860-29 December 1861.).The story ofthis earlyweekly paper is somewhat controversial, therefore I set out to describe it from several aspects, using the recollections of several people (Lajos CSERŐ, Ignác ARNÓTHI SZABÓ and László VISONTAI KOVÁCH) and thus introducing new angles to the story of this publication. Apart from discussing the history ofthe paper, I also include the biographies of its journalists and editors, for example the first editor of the Eger Gazette, Ferenc Albert (Montedego), one of the pioneers of Elungarian photography Zsigmond Horváth, the co-editor of the Eger Gazette Ignác Szabó and its editor József Danielik.
