Sándor Gebei FRANCIS IIRÁKÓCZI’S ATTEMPTS TO GAIN THE SUPPORT OF CHARGES XII OF SWEDEN The Visits ofEnvoy Pál Ráday (1704-1709) Francis II Rákóczi strongly believed that the anti-Habsburg powers, especially France and its Lutheran ally Sweden would seize the opportunity created by Hungary’s war of independence, to provide at least diplomatic, or at best financial and/or military assistance to shake off the shackles of the House of Habsburg. This short study sets out to answer whether Rákóczi had any chance of assistance from Sweden after the disastrous battle of Poltava (1709). Was there the potential for a Swedish-Ottoman alliance, which could have involved Hungary to attack Vienna and revoke the Treaty of Karlowitz? Or would this Swedish-Ottoman alliance be formed against Russia in order to restore the Swedish influence in Poland and ease the Russian pressure on the Ottoman borders? The only positive result ofRáday s envoy was to provide a clear picture for Rákóczi of the power play between the Swedish king, the Russian tsar and the Ottoman sultan. This was a bitter lesson of experience, forcing Rákóczi to face up to the fact that his role in the East-European region had weakened considerably. 353
