Petra Köves-Kárai HIDDEN HEROES FROM THE PYRKER COLLECTION. PAINTINGS OF HISTORY AT THE EGER ARCHBISHOPRY The author sets out to present the history of this basic collection during and after the growth of the Pyrker Gallery. Apart from the most prominent works (such as Portrait of a Youth by Giorgione, Portrait of Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus by Gentile Bellini, Allegory of Venice by Veronese) the study also discusses a series of illustrations, acquired by the Archbishopry of Eger during the Patriarch-Archbishops posting there. The author researched the history of the lithographs, dedicated to Ferdinand V examining their place within the Eger collection that was donated by the archbishop and focusing on the reasons and aims of these historical illustrations that became more and more popular in the 1830s. The portrait of the archbishop, dressed as a Cistercian abbot is related to this topic. It was painted around 1835 and shows him in Venice, with two key locations in the background: Lilienfeld and Szepeskáptalan (Spisská Kapitula), where he held positions before coming to Eger. The portrait was painted byjohann Nepomuk Höfel, addressing him as the “g°°d friend of the Habsburgs”. 305
