PLANS FOR THE MAUSEOLEUM AT THE TOMB OF GÉZA GÁRDONYI

The great author of the Eclipse of the Crescent Moon, Géza Gárdonyi died on 30 October 1922. The town’s assembly decided to erect a mauseoleum at his grave the following month. A design contest was held for the mauseoleum. The construction was financed by the town directly, but a collection was also held nationally. Out of the 32 entries two were given the first prize, but one was approved as suitable for execution, the design by Tibor Müller with the motto “Egri”. The initial enthusiasm of the donors started to fade and the amount required for the construction was still not available in 1936. The mauseoleum was not built. Even today Géza Gárdonyi sleeps the sleep that knows no waking in the ground of the Bebek Bastion, under a wooden cross: Only his body.
