Additional Data on Miklós Szmrecsányi’s work in Eger

Szmrecsányi had a successful career in Budapest. He profited both from his law and art history studies. He held key positions in the National Society of Hungarian Fine Arts, then from 1895 he was head of the Art Department in the Ministry of Religion and Education. In 1899 he retired with the title of ministerial counsellor. Regarded as a highly acknowledged expert in the capital, Miklós Szmrecsányi was in awe of the abundance of Eger’s historical monuments and was keen to be involved in the work related to them.

This was probably the motivation to leave Budapest at the turn of the century and move to his older brother in Eger. Minister JózsefVass later tried to lure him back to the capital, offering the presidential post of the National Committee for Historic Monuments, which he turned down, deciding to remain in Eger until his death.

The study uses archival sources to provide additional information on Miklós Szmrecsányis work in Eger, which involved monument protection and the establishment of the scientific foundations for the operation of the Archipiscopal Lyceum Museum.
