THE ETHNOGRAPHIC RELEVANCE OF THE FIRST HUNGARLAN-LANGUAGE PERIODICALS

Ethnography, the notion of national character was born in the first half of the “long 19th century” in Hungary, a country characterised by multi-ethnicity, multilingualism and multiculturalism. While the concept of “national character” existed from the start of neologism, the term “ethnography” was not yet used in the first Hungarian-language periodicals published in the late 18th and early 19th centuries (Mindenes Gyűjtemény, Magyar Hírmondó, Sokféle). Nevertheless, some of the articles by György Bessenyei, Ferenc Kazinczy, János Batsányi or István Sándor, published in these periodicals, did have ethnographic relevancies (discussing topics such as national costume, customs, traditions, etc.), with attempts at deliberating the concept of national character. We have collected some of these in honour of dr. Tivadar Petercsáks 70th birthday.
