Harangozó Gábor - Tóth Zoltán: A káli avar kori temető

Gábor Harangozó — Zoltán Tóth The avar cemetery in Kál It was under the leadership of the Eger István Dobó Castle Museum archaeologist László Fodor that the territory of the gravel pit in Kál was subject to a rescue excavation in the summer of 1997. Unfortunately the restricted time available and the poor weather meant that conditions were not perfect for the detection of specific archaeological finds. The period during which the cemetery was in use - based on what we know about the graves - cannot have been more than 140-150 years, during which time there appears to have been a gap of one or two decades when burials appear not to have taken place. The most recent graves are arranged from south to north. Among the southerly grave group is grave 7, which, from what we know about the finds there, suggests that the graves which had been destroyed were either of a similar age or earlier — and were definitely among the oldest there. As one moves further north there is an ever greater likelihood of coming across the cast bronze belt decorations that were characteristic of the 8th century, which are concentrated in the cemetery’s northern grave group. Of these it is most easy to draw conclusions from grave 5 - on account of the lily belt mountings - that the owner of an object like this would have been buried in the first third of the 9th century. Anything more accurate as regards the dating of the grave can only be achieved by an anthropological analysis of the human remains. The grave was victim to a grave robbery around the time of the burial. The decaying process experienced by the body only came to an end when the bones had already been dispersed. It is for this reason that one can conclude that the robbery took place about 10-15 years after the burial. Thus, one can make a tentative guess of about AD 830-850 for the date of the robbery, although a later date is also not out of the question. 240
