Avar cemetery in Sírok

During the course of mining work in Sirok at the so-called Csörgő border section of the Liszkó Valley in the August of 1968 some archaeological finds came to light. The finds were considered to be from the Avar period. It wasn’t long before work started on the rescue dig, which in 1968 led to the discovery of 8 graves, followed by a further grave in the spring of 1969.

Due to the small number of finds it is difficult to put the Avar cemetery near Sirok in any chronological framework, and the grave finds are insufficient to place them within a tighter time scale. Most probably the majority of the dead were buried in the first half of the 8th century.
