Katalin Lázár The Function of Traditional Games in our Days Traditional games make a part of Hungarian traditional culture being not out-of- date and useless, being worth fostering not only because of some romantic patriotic sentiments. Children need nowadays also what they could learn during playing formerly. Before universal compulsory education games meant the school of children. Their movement culture, the ability of handling instruments were developed during playing, they became acquainted with various materials during playing. They became skilful also mentally. They leamt the complicated laws of communication and socialization. This helped them in taking their place in society. If we realize that games are important, we have to step only one more; to leave didactics behind and play with pleasure also as adults. Games are useful also for adults: children are enthusiastic admirers of those adults playing with them like being of the same rank, not instructing them, not developing them, but joining the group as a playmate accidentally knowing more games than them. Edification and development certainly happens, but there is no need proclaiming it permanently, without that it happens much more effectively. Games do not solve all problems, but certainly they solve a lot or prevent their emergence, and 283
