Tiborné Harcsa The Nursery School Museum The only museum in Hungary on the history of children day-care is the Nursery School Museum. The exhibition displays the history of Hungarian nurseries from the beginnings: from the opening of the first nursery in Central Europe by countess Teréz Brunszvik in June 1828 until 1960 through toys, teaching instruments, documents, books and photos. A 40-slide show of interiors in chronological order was made for the presentation. The battered toys exhibited from different periods at the turn of the 19th century exemplify the inventiveness of the Hungarians, there was no toy factory at that time in the country. Expensive, foreign made toys did not find their way to the state or municipally run nurseries. Caring was done by the German Fröbel method in several nurseries. In the nursery schools of the 1920s besides instrumental games, toy-accessories, like sword, hussar hat, chef hat, apron, small craftsmen tools, for role-plays were also used. Countless natural materials were used to make toys for the children. Games and toys of fairs and sand-kits found their way into the nursery school. The civilian toys of private nurseries in the 1930s are also displayed. Meticulously made small furniture, china pots, dolls, animals and stone building blocks with sample sheets, tale books can also be seen. Caring in these days was done by the method of Maria Montessori. Fewer toys can be seen from the 1940s, the war swept them away. Some models: dolls room, bathroom, school, farm are present in the exhibition. Numerous toys, instruments of toy kitchen, living room furniture, yard toys, role-play accessories, e.g.: doctor’s case, prams represent the 1950s. Naturally, there are also various dolls, tale-books, photos from every period. I have been collecting the materials of the Nursery Museum from 1970. We obtained an official operating licence in 1992, and have functioned in Marton- vásár since 1995 with the exhibition encompassing 142 years. Our aim is to 172
