Irén Császi Museum and Play Tradition - Active Play Culture Tribute to Lóránt Faragó (1912-1985), toy collector The István Dobó Castle Museum Eger of the Heves County Museum Service organized a specific training with the title of "Museum and Play Tradition - Active Play Culture" between 8-9 March 2012. The conference involving 26 presenters focused on the topic of documenting, presenting and transmissing the Hungarian play culture. It gave an overview about the material of the Hungarian toy museums, museum toy collections, toy exhibitions, traditional folk techniques and contemporary object design, and about forms and possibilities of conveyance, teaching, bequeathing with an interdisciplinary approach. The year 2012 is outstanding in the relationship between Eger and toys. Lóránt Faragó, toy collector, whose collection of more than 2,000 items has been enriching the Castle Museum’s collection since 1985, was bom 100 years ago. Due to curators’ care the toy collection still prospers, it is over 3000 items by now; publications, special exhibitions, professional days, museum classes, guided tours spread the word. Beside Hungarian idustrial pieces, the collection also features Russian, Japanese, German, French, and American toy factories’ products from the end of the 19th century. The miniature doll houses, doll rooms, doll furniture, chinaware, construction toys, metal toys with clockwork or flywheel, train and car models on layouts, 300 pieces of various automobiles, highways, tin soldiers, toy castles, electrical and mechanical toys depict different periods in toy history. Outstanding units of the collection development are a set of multigenera- tional upper classes’ toys of Margit Virágh of Szuha and wooden toys of contemporary toy makers, too. Getting into a public collection, the history of Lóránt Faragó’s private collection is continued, and it encourages research, collection development, presentation, transmission and creation. 15
