Ethnographic Toy Collection of the Rippl-Rónai Museum

Of distinguished significance among the near one-hundred thousand strong main ethnographic collection of the Kaposvár Museum founded in 1909 are those objects, photos, manuscript archive data, audio tapes that conjure the world of peasant children’s life in Somogy County.

The collecting of toys at the end of the 19th century also affected Somogy County (Áron Kiss, Béla Vikár), but the monographic depiction of children’s life, the collecting of toys from village to village, their transfer to the museum and elaboration in the first half of the 20th century was attributed to Ferenc Gönczi (1861-1948). Ethnographic theme photography also began on his initiation, Sándor (Ébner) Gönyey, the chief officer of the Ethnographic Museum made snapshots about the living conditions, toys, habitual actions of Somogy County children, part of which served as illustration for his volume titled Somogy County Child, published in 1937.

In the second half of the 20th century the ethnographic collection was further promoted by Judit Knézy, Árpád Együd and Orsolya Kapitány striving to expand the highly valuable material taken to the museum by Gönczi through field collections and children’s toy competitions.
