Nagy Géza Balázs: Adatok az Egri Káptalan XIII. századi működéséhez
Géza Balázs Nagy Data on the operation of 13 t h century Eger Chapter By continuing an earlier research, the original privileges of Eger Chapter issued during their ecclesiastical notarial function between 1268 and 1298 have been compared from three aspects. On the one hand, comparing the practically permanent initial and end part of the charters it emerged that the first part of the form evolved by 1262 had not changed. The fact that only the structure of the end part stayed stable could be traced back to several reasons. On the one hand the changes in the person of the Monarch and the Esztergom and Kalocsa Archbishops were indicated in the same way as the names of the prebends appearing at the trials. Beside all this, for example in 1279, at the time of introducing the new chapter seal a new part was introduced into the end that was left out at around 1286. New information was also gathered in connection with the inner order of the Chapter too. Parishes of bigger dioceses were organised into deaconates, and they were organised into archdeaconates to govern them more efficiently. In the first half of the 13 t h century archdeacons moved from their archdeaconates to bishop's seats and became members of the Chapter already in function there. It turns out from the honorary order of notarial function charters that by the second half of the 13 t h century this process in Eger had entirely finished as archdeacons formed a kind of corporation. Their order depended upon their first archdeacon nomination and if a position before them fell vacant they automatically (promotio gradualis) stepped forward. At such times they could also be transferred to lead other districts. This was a more or less independent event from the rank itself, thus partly the greatness of the benefice of certain archdeacons and partly the intention of the respective peer could be detected. The Chapter Archive signs were successfully filtered from the inscriptions on the back of the original charters that were by now scattered. According to all this it can be stated that the documents of notarial function were maintained by a place based system in Eger and were already catalogued in the 13 t h century. This recognition could help in future to find a more accurate picture of the devastation and dispersion of the Chapter Archive during the Turkish Occupation (16-17 th centuries) according to the present place of keeping. 26
