B. Pap Györgyi: Tűzre, vízre vigyázzatok!

Györgyi B. Pap Beware of fire, water! Watchmen played an important role in the everyday life of Eger in the 18th century. They were on duty night and day to protect the inhabitants of the town from all danger, strangers, night vagabonds and from the biggest enemy of all, natural forces: fire and water. Despite all this there are very few remaining data in the available 18th century town documents about their hard and tiring activities. Through these two interesting sources, the script of Night Yellings for Watchmen recorded in 1760 and The Regulations of Heyducks and Watchmen published in 1790 one can get an insight into their varied tasks and the difficulties of their fulfilment. Due to the tireless work of watchmen the people of Eger could feel their values and lives in greater security during the 18th century. 122
