Monika Lipp A Rococo painting of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Some recent research findings concerning the one-time convent and church of the Brothers of Mercy in Eger The newly restored Rococo oil painting in the Archdiocesan Museum in Eger depicts the Sacred Heart of Jesus according to the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. The heart with flames appears on a throne. The picture is rich in symbols, for example there are five roses which refer to the five wounds of Christ, and a pearl oyster symbolizing the Virgin Mary's womb. The composition, the throne on clouds is very similar to Josef Fromiller's painting (painted in 1738) in the Landesmuseum Kärnten in Klagenfurt. According to sources from the XVIIIth and XlXth centuries this painting was part of an altar in the church of the Brothers of Mercy (officially called "Hospitaller Order of St. John of God") in Eger. The Sacred Heart of Jesus altar was placed in the church in 1740. The painter is unknown. In 1961, when the church was emptied, the picture was taken to the Sacred Heart of Jesus church in Eger. The painting was restored in 2007 by Dóra Verebes. 361
