Földi Viktória: Az Orczy-család temetkezése Erdőkövesden

Viktória Földi The Burial of the Orczy Family in Erdőkövesd Over the centuries aristocratic families have endeavoured to ensure that the memories of their ancestors are respected with suitable decorum. For this purpose they built crypts and mausoleums. In Erdőkövesd the descendants of József Orczy, grandson of the poet Lőrinc Orczy, have managed to establish something of a family burial cult. In the crypt that can be found under the chancel of the local church one can find the body of István Orczy, who died a hero's death in the 1848/49 War for Freedom. Once the family had died out on its male side, members of the Piret de Bihain, Bebenburg Karg, Csömör Zay and the Zelensky families were buried here. The study looks at the strategy the Orczy family and their descendents adopted when placing the bodies in the crypt, as well as the burial traditions, by considering the representational and oral traditions surrounding funerals during the 18 t h and 19 t h centuries. 278
