were paid, the issuing of letters of safe conduct, the establishing of the identity of prisoners and the compensation for any damage caused by beggar prisoners. There is another category of letters that were written to Koháry, namely the complaints concerning the damage inflicted during raids, as well as the perpetual accusations that the captain-general and his forces had contravened the 1664 Peace of Vasvár. The occupiers were forever threatening to report Koháry to his seniors in the army for the attacks inflicted on military installations and formations, and even commercial units and properties belonging to the Turks themselves. On the other hand the Ottoman authorities were also known on occasion to express thanks, if their demands for change were met with a positive response. Although the Turks did not consider themselves to be responsible for the thefts that were committed in the Hungarian territories, there was no doubt that the damage that was inflicted was done by them. When István Koháry brought their attention to such cases, they were quick to deny the charges, if they were not accompanied by any substantiating evidence. 123
