4. Exhibitions: these present any new findings coming out of any one programme, and are complemented by an exhibition catalogue. Museologists, university and academic research institutions in the neighbouring counties frequently co-operate with our museum colleagues. Some programmes eventually came to an end following several decades of research work, some are still going on as we speak. In the Heves County volumes (I-III) of the The Topography of Hungarian Ancient Monuments series, the entries for the county's settlements, folk architecture, as well as the chapters on archaeology, were written with the co-operation of the museum staff (1953-1978). The Visonta project (the research into the village of Visonta), 1967-1975. Its intention was to save the village's archaeological, historical, ethnographical monuments prior to the construction of the power station there. Research culminated in the publication of a collection of studies. Palóc research, 1967-1989. More than 40 experts took part in this project during its existence. The research work in which many disciplines were represented recorded the culture of the ethnographical group known as the Palóc, from the point of view of ethnography, archaeology, linguistics, history and anthropology. It was accompanied by a number of publications: Approaches to Palóc research (23 volumes), thematic and local monographs (5 study volumes), Palóc research studies (1 volume), culminating in four volumes taking the form of a broad overview going under the title Palócok, containing 36 studies from 30 different researchers, 150 gatherings in length. The research of the Tisza II. Lock , from 1985. the aim of which was to record the area's natural treasures and places of social historical interest. The Tiszai Téka series was published in three volumes. Local Ethnographical Conferences, 1981-1999. The intention was, within the context of 13 local conferences, to provide new insights for researchers, amateur enthusiasts and local history societies. 13 local conferences were held, and the presentations that were made were published in a series of papers. The studies into literary history are very much dominated by the figure of Géza Gárdonyi. Intensive research began in 1965, when a large part of the author's personal effects found their way into the museum. There are regular professional conferences put on for the benefit of researchers, and studies analysing his life's work are published in both the museum yearbook and individual volumes. Another important programme is that devoted to the research of Hungary's border fortresses. Conferences on the history of castles have been held on a twoyearly basis since 1982. These are attended by military, political and economic historians, as well as people interested in the history of technology, sociologists, educationalists, ethnographers, literary, art and architectural historians. So far there have been 12 conferences, and the lectures have been published in 11 volumes. 310
