Dániel Vincze The Habsburgs' Eastern Diplomacy on the Eve of the 1552 Campaign Alternatives and Historical Responsibility in Relation to the Prevention of the Turkish Offensive With the research that has gone on in recent decades, the events of 1552, and the siege of Eger Castle in particular, have now become one of the best documented historical episodes of the period. This is something that has made the finding of new approaches and perspectives especially difficult for those researchers who are interested in this particular theme. Despite this there continue to be two basic openings available to those eager to find an avenue of research. The first is to find a completely new topic, and one that has yet to be published, the second is to delve deeper into an area that has already been covered. Although the researcher embracing a new field doesn't have the luxury of falling back on previous findings, the new terrain offers prospects of numerous breakthroughs, as well as frustrations. Those starting their research with the benefit of the work and advice of experienced colleagues, however, are in a good position to launch into those more obscure areas that have yet to be fully understood by the profession. In our opinion both openings have their own merits and drawbacks, and it is for this reason that in this particular paper we would like to combine both methods in addressing a historical chapter that is by no means unknown. 109
