Palmer Matthew: Alexandriai Szent Katalin szobrának új datálása

made easier by the restoration carried out by Péter Módy, during which the two fragments excavated in the region of the Dobó Bastion, were joined together with the addition of an inserted piece of stone carved with hypothetic continuations of the drapery contained in the two parts. Our 2002 study differed from its predecessors by seeking to date and locate the origins of a sculptor, by focusing on what we soon discovered was an extremely rare strap design made up of three clasp elements. During the course of the study we were only able to find one instance of the triple-clasp design, that worn by Pygmalion's statue in a Parisian manuscript of the Roman de la Rose (Valencia, Biblioteca Universitaria Ms. 387, fol. 141r.) dating from the beginning of the 14th century. 4 It led to our dating the figure two or three decades earlier than had previously been thought, despite the fact that we were aware that the illuminators of the Valencia manuscript had rendered the clothing worn by the figure described in Jean de Meun's 13th century text right down to the smallest detail. 5 Earlier attempts at dating the figure of St Catherine included Károly Kozák's suggestion that it came from the deanery chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary re-founded by Bishop Péter Rozgonyi (1425-1438) on 13th July 1430. 6 Dating the figure of St Catherine closer to 1400, however, meant finding an alternative architectural context, which Kozák had already suggested may have been the Chapel of St Catherine in another hypothesis of his, which we know from documentary evidence to have existed from at least 1424 to 1588. 7 It is a theory Plate 2.
