Róbert Kemény fi A Preparatory Sketch for the Painting István Dobó Defends Eger Castle Against the Turks The study focuses on a preparatory sketch by the Hungarian artist Aladár Kriesch (1863-1920), which the artist painted in 1896/97 for the County of Heves on the occasion of the Hungarian millennium celebrations. The picture features the victory over the Turks at Eger Castle (1552). The interesting thing about the sketch is that the characters and the scene that appear in the final oil painting can all be identified. Kriesch's written directions also tell us that he used Sebestyén Tinód (1505?-1556)'s epic poem as a source of inspiration. The above text also points to the fact that a dispute opened between the artist and the patron. The picture failed to gain the approval of the people of Eger. Although there is no salutation on the canvas that was finally displayed, it is probable that Kriesch sent an accompanying letter providing the necessary information to Elek Lippich (Koronghy) (1862-1924), the then head of the Artistic Department of the Ministry of Religion and Public Education, Kriesch's staunch supporter. 669
