Debrecen. Erzsébet Bődi Everyday Eating Customs in Gömör Gömör is one of the Carpathian Basin's great geo-historical regions. It is an area inhabited mainly by Slovaks and Hungarians. While the northern part of Gömör is hilly, its southern limits are flat. As a result the region's traditional economy is divided, the people of the northern relying on forestry and extensive animal husbandry, and those living in the south concentrating on farming and the keeping of livestock. It was these economic circumstances that determined traditional eating habits. The study focuses on everyday meals, and the habits and etiquette accompanying them. We cover the clothes people wore for particularly important meals, the relative importance of meals, the positions that men, women and children took around the table, people's eating times at home, the characteristic food that was eaten during the course of the week, and the evolution of the traditional two or three daily mealtimes. The study notes the changes that took place when the population took up employment, and the effects this had on eating habits, particularly during the last century. We also analyse the ratio of cooked meals to cold meals. We describe the kind of food that was offered to unexpected visitors, strangers and expectant mothers, and the unwritten rules that applied on such occasions. 407
