Eger. Györgyi B. Pap Bishop of Eger Károly Eszterházy's 1764 Fire Regulations Compared with the other episcopal landowners and other landowning members of the chapter in 18th Century Hungary, Eger led the way in the field of fire prevention. Although numerous recommendations were made and measures taken in the interests of fire protection, the most comprehensive fire regulations still remain Bishop of Eger Count Károly Eszterházy's Puncta Regulationis Incendii of 1764. The main principle behind the regulations was that in case of fire the delegation of responsibilities made extinguishing the flames easier. Fire prevention and the procedure used for putting out the fire he imagined as being based on organisational structures already existing within the guilds and between their members. It was not only the members of the guilds who had to take part in the fight against fire, but the population of the town as a whole. The directions prescribing what needed to be done to prevent fires and what needed to be done when a fire broke out applied to them also. The regulation of 1764 is more aware of the dangers and better organised than those that preceded it, and would have provided a more effective defence for the walled town of Eger. One great oversight was that it didn't provide any cover for the ever-growing suburbs. The study contains the directions given in the form of source materials. 601
