László Horváth Vámosgyörk Folk Customs The author has been dealing with certain aspects of the history of Vámosgyörk for nearly a decade now. Geographically the village belongs to the Great Plain rather than the foot of the nearby Mátra Hills. Life in the village followed a strict course, from the birth to the death of its inhabitants and in accordance with the passing of the seasons. People's everyday existence was determined primarily by what was by modern standards oppressive physical labour. The locals hated to see uncultivated land and held the work-shy with contempt. For most people Sundays and feast days were the only days of rest. Apart from the common religious, church festivals every family had their own special days coinciding with individual anniversaries, which according to a local saying consisted of "birth, marriage and death".
