Zomborka Márta: Pásztorbor a főpásztornak. Adalékok Nagy Pál Miklós életútjához, munkásságához

Márta Zomborka Shepherd's Staffs for the Head Pastor: Notes on the Life and Work of Pál Miklós Nagy In the ethnographic collection of the Ignác Tragor Museum in Vác one can find a number of decorative staffs, shepherd carvings, which were meant for decoration rather than use. Two of these staffs were made especially for the head pastor, the Bishop of Vác, something evident from the inscriptions they contain. The maker of the staff, Pál Miklós Nagy, was an interesting character in the world of Hungarian pastoral arts. Indeed, he was responsible for creating his own genre. His handling of materials, his carving method and use of lettering was utterly unique. Although his life's work illustrates well how the necessary grasp of the material and technique can influence the decorative arts, it is the emergence of the custom of presenting specially-made objects as gifts that is of particular interest in his work. There is certainly a good deal that still needs to be discovered concerning the life and work of Pál Miklós Nagy and it is hoped that in time it will be rewarded with a suitable monograph. 172
