Lajos Misóczki Religious Toleration as Exemplified in the Measures Taken by Ferenc Rákóczi II in the Counties of Northern Hungary The peasant uprising which began in north-eastern Hungary turned into a national war of independence in 1703 with the appearance of Ferenc Rákóczi IL His aspirations were expressed in the slogan "With God for Fatherland and Freedom" which appeared on his banners. His politics were founded on the creation of a national union. 1. He aligned the peasantry with the nobility. 2. He pulled the nationalities living in Hungary and Transylvania into the struggle (although the Croats and the Serbs remained enemies for the most part). 3. He managed to push religious differences into the background. In an effort to avert religious discord Ferenc Rákóczi II exercised a consistent policy of religious toleration. It was thanks to him that the struggle did not develop into a war of religion. His measures embraced religious toleration, something which encouraged a feeling of solidarity right across society. Rákóczi's patience, ability to compromise, and his insight and understanding were important in preventing religious division and conflict. At the centre of this drive for unity lay a reconciliation between the different religions and congregations. 194
