László Domboróczki The Early Neolithic Period in North-Eastern Hungary Alföld Linear Pottery Culture in Heves County An Introduction to the "Early Farmers in Europe" Multimedia CD-ROM The CD-ROM which appears as a supplement in the yearbook is intended to give a summary-type overview of the research which has been going on in the study of Neolithic Culture in Heves County over the past few years. On the disc you will find a richly illustrated electronic book, produced between 1999 and 2001, as part of the international "Early Farmers in Europe" project funded by the European Community. 1 The work is not intended exclusively for the archaeological community, being aimed rather at the general public, and particularly those of school age. It was for this reason that we often avoided the detailed references which frequently make archaeological publications difficult to follow, choosing instead a format containing several hundred coloured pictures, video clips and maps accompanying a offered some literature and text describing the most important Neolithic finds and sites in our region. We also included an encyclopedia including topics, glossaries, suggested readings and many other supplementary educational materials. It was our main aim to make the most recent research findings all the more accessable to the general public, showing as many finds as possible in an inexpensive format. 2 During preparation we endeavoured to use the most up-to-date research findings on the CD. The majority of the archaeological finds uncovered in the past few years have been at rescue digs connected with a number of major investments. During the course of these investigations not only did we make some important discoveries about the Neolithic period in Heves County we also added substantially to our museum's Neolithic collections. However, such is the pace of change in archaeology at the present time that it was impossible to make any definitive statements. In the past two years, for example, studies have already produced results which have made some of the conclusions on the CD appear somewhat dated. In the southern limits of the county for example we found the first Mezolithic settlements and a site dating from the first period of the New Stone Age. It is for this reason that the CD needs to be brought up to date from time to time. We aim to update the 1st version two or three years from now. 1 For the main aims and participants of the project see: László Domboróczki: "Early Farmers in Europe" in "Múzeumi Hírlevél" XXI/1, January 2000 2 The CD-ROM was produced in 600 copies for charge-free propagation - with copyright reserved. 75
