Gergely Csiffáry The List of the Heroes of the 1552 Defence, Their Fate and the Surname "Egri" The study comprises of two parts: the first part is an introduction, providing a summary, together with a collection of data, including a list of the defenders of the castle together with some additional biographical information. It is here you will discover that the list of 313 defenders that you can read on the wall of Heroes' Hall on the ground floor of the Bishop's Palace corresponds exactly with those carved on the marble plaque beside the entrance to the underground passageways. It was Géza Gárdonyi who first attempted to identify the defenders of the castle when collecting authentic material for his novel Egri csillagok (The Stars of Eger). In 1902, on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the siege of Eger Castle, the Budapesti Hírlap published the 280 named defenders of the castle identified by the author. Gárdonyi continued to look into the identities of the heroes of Eger, and amongst his papers he left an up-dated version with 293 names. This latter list was revised by his son dr. József Gárdonyi, who left out four people. When he published Egri csillagok in 1923 with the shortened list, he claimed he was respecting his father's final wishes. Subsequently a list containing the full 293 names was to appear in a supplement to Egri csillagok. Since then numerous editions of the novel have appeared some containing the list of 289 names, others 293. Géza Gárdonyi and his son dr. József Gárdonyi's list contains many inaccuracies, misspellings and indeed false names. As these, and a finalised list of 1965, are the only ones general readers are ever likely to become acquainted with, this current article intends to make an even more complete and accurate list of the participants in the 1552 siege. The present author was finally able to produce a list containing 356 names, all of which are numbered. Those names preceded by a cross (|) died a hero's death, those preceded with an asterisk (*) were injured during hostilities. Those names which aren't marked are of those who took part but are known not to have been injured. The number of defenders of the castle must have been 1935 at the very least, with historians agreeing that there must have been 2100 people at the most within the confines of the castle at the beginning of the conflict. If we take the minimum possible number of defenders into consideration, then we know the names of 18.4% of those who took part, using the maximum number this figure falls to 16.9%. According to the list of 356 names, 18 (5.0%) of them were non-Hungarians. 360
